Wall Stud Calculator

A wall is not just the studs at regular spacing. You need extra studs at corners, at both ends, and three more for every door or window opening. This calculator counts them all so you can price the wall correctly.

Questions people ask

How many studs for a 12 foot wall?

A 12 foot wall at 16 inches on center needs 10 studs at regular spacing, plus 2 corner studs and 1 end stud, plus 3 per opening. A wall with one door comes to 16 studs.

Why do I need extra studs around a door?

The king studs on either side of the opening carry the header load and provide nailing surface for the trim. The center of a three-stud opening is called a cripple stud and carries nothing but trim.

16 or 24 inch stud spacing?

16 inches on center is the standard for walls carrying the roof load or heavy fixtures. 24 inches is acceptable for a non load bearing partition, and it saves real money on a long wall.

What height studs should I buy?

For an 8 foot wall, buy 92 inch studs (8 feet plus a 4 inch short header on top). For a 9 foot wall with a raised foundation or a dropped ceiling, use 10 foot studs.
